Airbus signed deals with two Chinese airlines, but looks set to close the year with fewer total orders than its forever rival Boeing.

China's Spring Airlines and Juneyao Airlines on Monday announced plans to buy 30 and 25 Airbus A320-family jets respectively, according to stock exchange filings.

American Airlines' first Airbus A321XLR, the company's longest-range single-aisle plane, is set to take off Thursday from New York for Los Angeles. The extra-long-range narrow-body jet "opens up the menu for all these destinations that are just too small for a widebody," American's head of network, Brian Znotins, told CNBC.

The Spanish government has ordered 100 Airbus helicopters, the European aerospace group said on Thursday, in what it says will be the largest helicopter purchase to date by the Spanish defence procurement agency DGAM.

European safety authorities issued preliminary instructions on Wednesday requiring airlines to inspect fuselage panels on dozens of A320-family jets after a production problem at a Spanish supplier prompted Airbus to slow deliveries.

Airbus has delivered around 30 aircraft in the first half of December, releasing jets at a below-average speed for the month as some airlines wait for details of fixes to a recent fuselage problem, industry sources and analysts said on Monday.
