Some investors think General Motors and Ford might be better off dead. But the S&P 500 automakers are still beating Tesla where it counts.

Ford is reaping the benefits of its bet on hybrids.  The automaker recorded surging hybrid sales in the last quarter, even as demand for EVs slowed.

Tesla ended the quarter with less than 50% BEV market share in the U.S. for the first time.

I continue to be optimistic on the upside potential for quality growth stocks. However, for the next few quarters, I am inclined to increase the weight of blue-chip stocks in the portfolio.

The auto industry is one of the longest-living sectors in stocks, and almost everyone knows the major players. As they are visible to the general public, auto companies are some of the first stocks investors contemplate.

CEO Jim Farley talked up Ford's plans to build a new range of affordable EVs in an earnings call.  It comes after Tesla also promised to accelerate its plans to build cheaper electric vehicles.

Despite a 35% drop in Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) stock this year, the company's market cap is $517 billion.

Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F), the American automotive titan, released its first-quarter 2024 earnings on Wednesday post-market closing. With a revenue surge of 1.3% y-o-y to $42.8 billion, a net income of $1.3 billion, and an adjusted EBIT of $2.8 billion, Ford's performance has surpassed expectations, showcasing resilience and growth amidst a dynamic market landscape.
