Budget airlines in the U.S. like Allegiant and Sun Country have faced a surge in costs following the pandemic and the increase in domestic capacity.

Low-cost airline Allegiant will acquire Sun Country Airlines in a deal valued at about $1.5 billion, including debt, the companies said on Sunday.

The proposed deal would bring together two carriers that have primarily served price-sensitive domestic vacationers at a time when that business model has come under strain.
