The Russell 2000 is one of the most popular stock indexes, consisting of the 2000 smallest companies from the Russell 3000. Most companies in the index are small cap, which often means more volatility and growth potential.

Abercrombie has been reaping the benefits of its semi-recent rebranding, now up more than 18 times its April 2020 record low of $7.42. This sharp upward trajectory has been accompanied by the 30-day moving average, which also captured the shares' pullback following a March 5 record peak of $140.28. The equity now sports a 453% year-over-year gain and has turned in only one weekly loss in 2024.

Retail is dead — at least it is supposed to be. E-commerce had already beaten the sector down when the pandemic drove the final nail into its coffin.

U.S. retail stocks Walmart (NYSE: WMT ), Amazon (NYSE: AMZN ) and Target (NYSE: TGT ) are using their delivery services to keep customers coming back.  A recent article from Barron's highlighted how the three companies are winning customers with superior delivery services.

Retail is a tough game. Competition is fierce, consumer spending can be fickle and the entire sector's fortunes are linked to the state of the economy.

In a similar vein to Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), retailer Gap (GPS) has rebranded in the last year, and the stock has exploded as a result. GPS is 133% higher year-over-year, riding an 8.2% post-earnings bull gap from March 8 to a March 13 multi-year high of $22.93.

The Houthi attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea, which started last year, sparked concern about the impact on retailers confronted with increased shipping rates and longer journey times as freight is rerouted from the troubled region.
